Dwarf Fruit Trees
Dwarf fruiting plants are a great option for the average back yard and smaller spaces. There are variances in size and growth habit which can be closely matched to the growing conditions you will be able to offer in your backyard or courtyard.
These forms include the Trixzee range which can need as little space as 1.5m x 1.5m through to the standard dwarf range which fit in between the size of the Trixzee and a full size tree.
During the peak of bare root season we carry dwarf varieties of apple, apricot, cherry, nectarine, peach, plum, pear as well as Citrus lemon, lime, mandarin and orange.
Our stone fruit range includes apricots, cherries, plums, nectarines and peaches. These are the full size trees.
Make sure you check with our staff on cross pollinating requirements for stone fruit. Remember there are self pollinating varieties.
If you are having trouble deciding which variety to go for why not try one of the two or three way trees we have on offer. Including Novelty Peachcot, 3 way plum – Satsuma / Mariposa / Santa Rosa, Apricot x Plum Cot n Candy and many more.
Apples, Pears & Quinces
These are some of the most popular fruits grown in home gardens.
In season we have 25 different apple trees to choose from. They vary both in variety of apple from the popular Pink Lady, the ever popular Granny Smith through to Santa Rosa and Flamenco.
We also have Columnar Apples and Semi Dwarf varieties which will allow you to grow apples in smaller spaces. Columnar varieties are able to be grown in narrow spaces which are hard to fill. Talk to our staff about where would be suitable. Ballerina Flamenco (Columnar Apple)
Apples are often a popular choice for espaliering, yet another way to reduce space while still getting a bumper crop of fruit.
Pears are another popular choice with 10 varieties to choose from. This includes a couple of two way trees – Williams / Beurre Bosc and Williams / Nashi. What great combinations!!
Quinces have also regained popularity in recent years. So why not try one and make some of your own Quince paste!!
As they are an evergreen plant the Citrus range does not really belong in the bare rooted range as they will be sold in pots and they are available all year round.
Our Citrus range includes lemons, limes, native limes, grapefruit, mandarins, oranges, cumquats and tangelo. We will also have a couple of crossed varieties ; Lemon / Lime and Lime / Mandarin.
Plants are available in 20cm, 25cm and 40cm pots depending on variety.
Grapes & Berries
Anyone who has eaten a berry straight from the plant will know the difference in flavor between the home grown and the supermarket varieties. Avalon Nursery are sourcing the following stock lines so you can taste the difference for yourself:
• Blackberry Thornless
• Loganberry Thornless
• Gooseberry Captivator
• Currants (Red, Black, White and Jostaberry)
You can never have too many berries as they freeze well and make lovely jam preserve if there are excess to what the family can eat fresh.
Ever fancied being able to go to your own grapevine and pick some lovely juicy grapes for the table? Or for the more adventurous to have your own wine making adventure? Please note that unfortunately we have not been able to source grapes this year and so do not have any in stock.
